Fun in the sun as Rossendale romp to fine win

A contrasting morning to last Sunday brought welcome sunshine and pleasant conditions for an entertaining encounter with Aldwinians at Marl Pits.

As the day broke, anybody could have been forgiven for expecting more poor weather - but surprise surprise we awoke to no arctic scene, blizzards or drifts but instead a Spring like scene bordering on the pleasant and comfortable for players and spectators alike.
Aldwinians were the visitors to fortunately avoid last weeks horrors and instead experience the decent playing environment , and they brought a 13 strong squad with good support , loads of enthusiasm and excellent sporting spirit.
Rossendale were up for this one from the start - possibly the novelty of 2 successive weeks' matches provided much needed continuity and cohesion but this was one of those days where it clicked on most fronts for the entire squad.
We played 2 games and won both, although the scores perhaps are slightly harsh to opponents who were spirited and combative but met a determined group eager to impose themselves and put on a show.
The first game ended 6-2 with scores from Rowan Tweedale , Tom Leech , Ieuan Bissell an outstanding hat trick and Michael Bailey. In the second match Rossendale played some outstanding rugby and triumphed 6-0, Rowan again, a strong running double from Jason " Wilkybob " Wilkinson , Ben Barnes , Max Dunn and Dan " DJ" Stevens hitting the mark.
This week didn't perhaps have the drama of some recent encounters but there was no lack of passages of play to admire - much improved aspects of play were seen in the rucking but also in the tackling and general teamwork and support play. Tackle heroes today were Jamie Boxall who was involved in everything, and Ben Barnes who simply sets the standard with technique and bravery. However this week there were massive improvements in tackling as more of the team gained confidence from a number of successful " hits".
Man of the match performances today were both easy decisions - Ieuan delivered his most impressive complete performance of this season , tries , tackles , surging running and support work, an all round fireball of energy . Jason continued the commitment of last week, combined with strength and bravery to deliver a high energy all round effort rounded off by 2 super tries too .
The calendar suggests 3 weeks with no game to follow - lets hope this is not the case as there is no doubt that game time experience is a boost to form and confidence , also offering the opportunity to develop team camaraderie .
Finally a word on the unsung heroes , the refs. Both "Enty " and Andrew Bissell did an outstanding job today, both managed each game with calm authority , clarity and fairness , and although this duty can often pass unnoticed , it's only right to recognise good performance in what's often a thankless task ! The crowd especially enjoyed Enty's articulation of the players " fancying " around during an untidy passage of play.........:-)
Here's to more fun in the sun next week - cue storm forecast !!!
