U9: Rossendale v Ashton under Lyne
Rossendale welcomed Ashton to Marl Pits and played two seven-a-side games of 10 minutes each way.
Rossendale’s U9s showed significant improvement following last week’s tournament. Rossendale started brightly in the first match and were convincing winners by nine tries to two. Ashton responded well in the second match and were leading at half time. However, Rossendale’s strength in depth showed and the finishing seven were able to turn the score around to win nine tries to six.
It was great to see a much greater proportion of the team making tackles today. Especially pleasing was the sight of new recruits stepping up to the challenge. Tom and Sam made a number of excellent tackles and it was great to see Ben make a mark on the tackle sheet too.
Rossendale showed good discipline by avoiding going into touch and turning over possession.
Archie made a number of straight runs and helped the team move the ball to Ashton’s try line. The champagne moment came when Luke’s run was stopped five meters short of the try line by two Ashton players. His precise off-load during the tackle found Alasdair in the perfect position to continue the attack. Alasdair moved the attack forward and when held up passed to Huey who was able to exploit the space that Luke and Alasdair had created and touch down for a try.
Luke and Fyn made a number of breaks and ran in eight tries and six tries respectively over the two games. Huey and Dan also crossed the line to register on the score sheet.
A great effort today U9s.
