Rossendale started brightly and Emily McLaren was adjudged to have knocked on, inches from the try line, within the first minute. By the third minute, Rossendale had the first points on the board with a try scored by Joe Butterworth after a strong drive from Isaac Cornwall. Almost immediately, Dukinfield retaliated with a darting run to score, but Rossendale went ahead again straight from the kick off, allowing Isaac Cornwall to get on the score-sheet himself. Joe Butterworth scored again to give Rossendale a 15-5 lead. However, Dukinfield finished the first half the stronger team, with 2 more unanswered tries to end the first half Dukinfield 15-20 Rossendale.
Dukinfield kept up the pressure with another try to level the score two minutes into the second half. A shuffle around, with Alex Kilshaw moving to scrum half, seemed to re-focus the Rossendale team, and Rossendale’s player of the match finally got her reward with a try. One further try each from Joe Butterworth and Isaac Cornwall ended the game Dukinfield 20-35 Rossendale.
It was a great team performance, made all the more impressive with 2 players, Sam Irving and Josh Baldacckino, playing their first ever game. The rest of the team all definitely deserve a mention too; Harry Butterworth in his first season is improving with every game, Niall Milligan had a strong game at hooker winning every Rossendale scrum, Tom Unsworth ran and supported well and tackled well above his weight all game and Ben Holdsworth-Miller was terrier-like and stole ball all over the pitch.
Player of the Match (selected by Dukinfield coach): Emily McLaren.
