Depleted under 14's can't hold off Southport

Many thanks to the players, officials and spectators for observing the silence before the game. Lest we forget.

The dampest of Rossendale mornings seemed a bonus for our boys who generally go well at home in the wet but things began to unravel as soon as we realised we were having to field only 14 players for this third round of the Lancashire Cup. Any thoughts the visitors might prefer the sunshine of the coast were dispelled as they attacked immediately through a fired up pack and inventive back play. An early score was justified but made worse for the Rossy team by the immediate loss of another - down to 13.

The boys rallied to their credit and scored two good tries in quick succession before the break to lead 14 - 10. The injury toll mounted in the second half and down to 11 players a quick consultation with the opposition confirmed officials to carry on and see the fixture out. The disruption was just too great though and Southport scored 22 unanswered points in the second half. Rossy didn't give up and more than one foray into the opposition 22 was unlucky not to result in points for them. A very tough day for the boys but the whole team showed a lot of spirit to the very end to their credit.

Thanks to Southport for their understanding (and reading the rules) and hopefully we can get a return fixture sometime soon.
