Honours even in a cracking game at Aldwinians

In an exciting rugby union clash between Rossendale 3rd team and Aldwinians 3rd team, which took place at Aldwinians' ground on a warm and dry Saturday, October 7th, the spectators were treated to a thrilling match. Rossendale, with 19 players in the squad, faced Aldwinians' squad of 26, but the spirit of sportsmanship prevailed as Aldwinians graciously lent 2 players to Rossendale to even the numbers.

The game began with Aldwinians taking the lead early on with the first try, showcasing their strength, especially considering their 1st and 2nd teams were idle. By halftime, Aldwinians had run in two more tries, leaving the score at 19-0 in their favour.

During the halftime talk, Rossendale recognized the potential in their strong backline and made some strategic changes. George Peel took over at the 10 position, and Rhys Dunn joined the left wing. This decision proved crucial in the second half, with both George and Rhys breaking through the defence and scoring a try each.

However, both teams grappled with the new tackling laws, resulting in 3 yellow cards for Rossendale and 2 for Aldwinians, all for high tackles. Some spectators believed the card count should have been more balanced, particularly after a non-punished dump tackle.

With Rossendale reduced to 13 men after two quick yellow cards, Aldwinians managed to score their only try of the second half, extending their lead to 26-12. But Rossendale, still determined with only 13 players, unleashed their backline, and Tyler Waddington broke through to score, narrowing the gap to 26-19.

In the final moments of the game, Rossendale continued to press, and in a dramatic turn of events, Rhys scored in the corner. With the score at 26-24 and the game hanging in the balance, George Peel stepped up and expertly converted the difficult kick to level the score at 26-26. The referee blew the final whistle, and the thrilling match ended in a draw, feeling like a triumphant win for Rossendale.

Next week, Rossendale 3rd team faces the top-of-the-table North Manchester with a 3 pm kick-off. Training sessions are held on Thursday at 18:30 at Marl Pits top Pitch, and all are welcome, including new players.
