The home side took a while however to get going, with influential captain Will Sharratt unavailable. The reshuffle saw Sam Bedlow move up from the junior colts to take his place, and it was he who seized on an inside pass to run a excellent line to split the Southport defence and open the scoring. He converted his own try to give Dale a 7-0 lead at the break.
The game took a while to “come alive“ with the visitors offering very little in attack to threaten Rossendale’s defence. The home side for their part had difficulty producing any continuity through the odd unforced errors or an official who wanted to slow the game down to his pace with the use of his whistle. Nevertheless the Dale youngsters stuck to their task and eventually ran in four second half tries. These came first from both hard running centres Jack Bibby and Tom Bedlow and were followed by two close range efforts by the powerful Max Chandler and the sniping Nicholas Street. Sam Bedlow converted three of the four to complete the scoring.
This was a somewhat routine win for the valley lads but left alot more to work on in training prior to this weekend's clash away at Tyldesley, Kick off Sunday 2.00pm.
