Mixed fortunes

After a fine run out a fortnight ago and some decent training in between hopes were high for a good mini tournament against visitors from Leigh and Ashton under Lyne. The promised large squads from each didn't materialise and Rossendale were down a couple of players too so at least admin and officiating were made easier.

Leigh came out of the blocks hard and clearly off the back of the rugby league season, intent on holding onto the ball and offering advice to Coach/Referee Jon as they went. Our boys made the mistake of standing back and too many missed tackles saw a three try deficit at half time turned into an eight try rout by the final whistle. Parents and coaches alike were wondering where the intent and aggression had gone.

Normal service and some of the finer points of union were restored against the depleted Ashton team with more shape in attack and defence from the Rossendale boys. In turn they scored eight tries against two for Ashton - one of which was scored against us by our own 'borrowed' player with a fine outside run.

Man of the Match on a mixed morning went to the consistently improving Daniel who carried well, tackled and put his training into practice; team try of the match was scored by Spencer who also had a very good morning in attack and defence; tackle of the match went to Aidan playing his first game for the U11's but borrowed for the morning by Ashton for his hard work on the biggest of the Leigh players. Special mentions also to Aidan and Dominic for sportingly helping out the Ashton cause.
