Rugby is quite a simple game...run forwards, pass backwards etc...organisation, it seems, isn't...and, you can't please all the people all of the time!
At 10am we didn't have a game...thankfully Leanne and the Rishworthian coaches and players didn't know this...at 10.05 we're in panic mode...at 10.30 half our U15's are in fetching (not Ireland) green with Rishy's warming up and ready to play while urgent communications get some out of bed, some out of the gym, some the shower...whatever, by 11ish we have a team in green. Rossendale green!!!
Now, this team is being stretched it is fair to say, moving rapidly away from the predictable style that has served them since they were nine or ten so there will be mistakes, people out of position, people moving about as they develop and, a couple of notables not here. All of that is okay and needs to be understood/forgiven/applauded.
As a game it is fair to say this was tight. An arm wrestle. Handling and other errors abounded but nicely reffed by our guests to allow a decent game nonetheless. Rossy lead 3-0 at half time. Tight.
The second half probably saw our improvised green team (?) suffer from the changes and a couple of missed tackles let the spirited visitors in for two tries under the posts and a third very well worked into the corner. A late series of attacks by the home side were repelled with stout defence so a game played in the best of spirits by the boys (who are the ones that count) ended 3-17 with a good win for Rishworthians. Not as tight.
The team saw a lot of positives, two debutants were way above expectations for instance and all the boys recognised what needs to be done which, as a coaching team asking them to make decisions and not be spoon-fed, is a huge positive in itself. Off to Kirkby Lonsdale for a bit of a party next week...as if!
Our thanks must go to Leanne, Matt and the rest of Rishy's for an excellent game played in the best of spirits, for reffing and accepting the 50:50 split of Lord-alone-knows-what-went-on later on Saturday. It's a simple game. Let's get behind this team. All of us.
