Rossendale gave their all and will no doubt re-group and come back even stronger next term.
Sheffield opened with a penalty from Joe Cridley but a break by Curtis Strong and from slick handling across the backline James Bramhall was on hand to send Leyton Taylor in for Rossendale, Steve Nutt adding the conversion.
With the Rossendale pack in control, Alex Isherwood was driven over for the second but with half time approaching Cridley slotted a second penalty for 12-6 at the interval.
In the second half a catch and drive by the home side was held up over the line but good interplay between Nutt and Bramhall created the space for Curtis Strong to go in for the third.
With Nutt shown a yellow card Sheffield took advantage and hit back with a try from Jack Hedley, the winger going over from a five metre scrum. Cridley added the conversion and it was Hedley again giving his side the lead, the winger cutting through from a second five metre scrum.
Rossendale hit back with a try from George Peel set up by Strong and Sam Atiola straight from the restart.
Strong went in for his second both converted by Nutt for a 31-18 lead but in the closing stages the visitors managed to find an extra gear with tries from Rupert Broadley and Toby Ademakin both converted by Cridley to take the win.
