This was a must win game for Rossendale after their defeat to Stockport last week and the fact that it was a home game.

Unfortunately Dale have lost two on the bounce, but with a combination of very poor refereeing decisions and a score line that I think slightly flattered Sandal, Dale have now lost three from six games.
Dale were well fired up for the visit of Sandal and for the first 20 minutes played some outstanding rugby from 1 – 15. The defensive structure was particularly good and the attack was direct with some hard straight running.

Paddy Pole opened the scoring with some great inter play from the backs and forwards and when Dale attacked again they were awarded with a Bramhall penalty to make the score 8 – 0.

From the re start Dale kicked long and with a well organised chase, but with one missed tackle Sandal got in behind and used the blind side to their advantage by scoring in the corner and with the conversion making it 8 – 7 the game was back on.

Dale re grouped but then through another mistake in defence gave away a penalty and three points. 8 – 10.

At this point Dale were under a little pressure in the scrums and were struggling to get hold and keep hold of the ball, but with some fantastic defence managed to keep Sandal out. Sandal however managed a drop goal just before the half time whistle. 8 – 13.
Considering Dale had very little ball and kicked badly with the wind we were quite happy at this point and confident of pulling off a win against a very good team.

Sandal scored another well taken drop goal early in the second half which was cancelled out through another Bramhall penalty. 11 – 16.
Dale then scored a try from their own line which passed through several players hands and eventually finished off from Jonny Appleton which would probably be in 101 best trys of all time. Dale were now flying and well in control of the game.

Sandal went on to win 16 – 31.

Dale have played some brilliant rugby today but have come away with no points and a big loss to a very good team. However, the positives have enormously outnumbered the negatives and on another day, it might have all been different.
