On a bright and sunny autumn day the Rossendale faithful were looking forward to some open and flowing rugby. Both sides were lying mid table having had a similar start to the season. Rossendale played up the hill in the first half and took an early lead with a penalty from Dan Holland. However, the score was soon 3-3 following a penalty for Wharfedale. Despite the conditions being perfect for open and flowing rugby the game was more a war of attrition with both sides struggling to break through the defence lines. Eventually it was the visitors who went ahead midway through the first half with a try out in the left corner. The conversion was missed leaving the score 3-8.
Just before half time the hosts thought they had scored in the corner courtesy of Byron McGuigan. The Rossendale back line eventually managed to work the ball out left through some slick handling. It reached the hands of McGuigan who dived for the line. It was thought the try was good, but ruled out by the officials. Half time came with the score Rossendale 3 Wharfedale 8.
With Dale now playing downhill and with a points difference of 5 the home spectators were expecting a comeback and some tries. However, it was not to be and due to a combination of unforced handing errors and missed tackles the visitors took advantage punishing Dale for their errors scoring a further 3 converted tries.
Dale thought they had scored a consolation try right on full time, but the ball was knocked on over the try line, perhaps summing up their afternoon.
