A gutsy away performance denied Bradford & Bingley another scalp to their recent and impressive run of wins. The Rossendale side ran out convincing winners against their opponents who failed to fire on a cylinders.
Within minutes, some good territory and pressure lead to Alasdair Harper breaking several tackles close to the line to score. Bradford looked out of their depth as a trademark Paddy Pole break from the fringe put Jamie Albinson through to race over the line. Steve Nutt converted. From the resulting Bradford kick off, Dale picked up a penalty, with most of the Home XV being in front of the kicker. Nutt stepped up and comfortably knocked the penalty over from 50m to leave Dale 15-0 up early on. The home side hit back from a loose kick by Rossendale, the Bradford back three moving the ball well to exploit the gaps in Rossendale's kick chase. Their pacey winger evading several last ditch tackles to score in the corner. Bradford got their tails up and with some good retention threatened the Dale line. However, a miss pass thrown by the scrum half was picked off by winger Danny Harrison, who sprinted 80m to touchdown. Another Nutt penalty late on in the half gave Dale a comfortable half time lead 23-5.
The second half was tit for tat; Dale's dominance in the forwards in the first 40 could not be replicated. They were being pressured by a large Bradford pack that were finally getting on the front foot when on the ball. However, Dale managed to find gaps in the Bradford defence and retained the ball, preventing Bradford from staging a comeback early in the second half. Two scores from Jamie Albinson and Steve Nutt set the platform for the win; with a Steve Nutt try coming in spectacular fashion - a one handed pickup from his own chip left the defence stood still as he waltzed under the posts. Bradford didn't quit and to their credit demolished the Dale pack in a 5m scrum to push over the line and score late in the second half. This late flourish didn't affect the result as Dale were comfortably ahead. The Dale side held out to record an important away victory.
Next week sees Dale take on Penrith in a rearranged fixture.
