Not a bad performance, just no Umph!

Broughton Park. (Merged with Didsbury TOCH)
Apologies everyone for the pitch confusion. The trusty Rossendale downpours got the better of the 2nd tier up and the First Team pitch so we had to be quite diplomatic and flexible in approaching the games and plans. So we really appreciate the 11’ and 13’s shifting off the pitch to accommodate our game when we appreciate they had spent a good deal of time setting up. Sorry and more importantly thank you!

Thanks Broughton Park for bringing across a team for a friendly so our season roles on with games, with the few drop outs at Lancashire Cup were have had a bit of treading water (On and off pitches) and enough training to warrant a change.

Spelling out our man (Men) of the Match…, the coaches are looking for stand out performances, of the right behaviours, this may not always be the most tries, most yards or most conversions.

Jacob, Man of the Match. The trophy is here with me and yours Wednesday at training. A lot of heart shown tackling and ball carrying, Jacob has great foot work (Meaning he can manoeuvre around people well and find space) and put it to good use. The coaches will sound like a broken record but what we want to see is tackling and the players thinking on their feet and putting the training work back in to their game. Jacob is a great coachable player, with lots of good skills. To progress we just like to see more of it, plenty more communication with the team and coming forward in to situations to make a difference and put those skills to good use.

Tommy – A super transformation of late and at times. (Keep it up and consistent Tommy) Tommy used to hang deep or wide, covering full back or wing, not really getting involved in the action. More recently Tommy has stepped up and been great both in tackling and ball carrying. Tommy’s technique is superb, he clean tackles hitting hard and low and with his shoulder and stops forward attacks on the spot. Really well done and very well done playing hard for the other team Sunday Tommy. To progress Tommy, let’s see more of it and were talking week in week out performances like Sunday.

Ash. All round superb attitude and effort. No moaning no criticism, just getting on with the job. Tackling superb and ball carrying superb. A little quieter in this game than last but all those elements coming together to warrant a stand out performance. We can see more rugby knowledge building and awareness of the game. Well Done!

The game itself was a bit one sided, when the ball went out to the Broughton Park wing is usually resulted in a try or within a phase or two a try. Broughton Park’s kick-chase went well for them also and we suffered at least 4 try’s whilst trying to chase the ball. Our defence was good at times but not enough to hold off the athleticism and skill of Broughton Park. Maybe the reason why some of our players didn’t see more of the ball and have opportunities to work towards the try line was a distinct lack of rucking and counter rucking. Each time we hit a breakdown situation it felt like we lost or were unable to capture the ball. This meant our possession time was quickly turned over and dealt confidence boost to the opposition and morale hit to our team.

A very decent charge up field in the first 20 minutes led and driven by Bailey was a good break and at a time we needed a psychological lift, lots of team work and some good basic passing and rucking to build on and showed we were very capable of breaking the Broughton Park defences. Rossendale individuals did some good work and some glimmers of the basic skills of passing, rucking and ball carrying were coming through in the game. The missing ingredient seems to be that next gear to pull together and summon as much or more passion and hunger as the other team.

Will still going well with great determination and grit, a handful of tackles and decent yards gained carrying the ball, well done.

Fin – Putting his head down and battling from a line out on our 20 to drive through and onwards leaving the maul and most of our players behind was really good to see and a great personal effort.

Joe doing well, scoring our only try and putting the ball over for the conversion also. Well done.
Big well done to Amour and Jamie, chalking up their first game time minutes, both handling themselves well on the field.

All players with a specific note above well done, this is a team game and no doubt much of the good work noted above started out from a fellow player and was supported by a fellow player.

As a reminder, please bring along, or send players along to our Thursday circuits class we have organised £3 per person Lean Gym 7-8pm Thursdays. This is a real asset to their game and match fitness. Please please please make every effort to get them along (Thank You!).
